Library Associate

STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Library Associates may work in all library departments and may work at branch locations.  Library Associates help users to find what they need in a library and often work in a face-paced and demanding environment. Performs other duties as required.

 

SUPERVISION

Works under the general direction and supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assisting users in all areas including computer use, readers advisory service and instruction
  • Answering the telephone
  • Making copies, faxing, scanning
  • Checking library materials in and out
  • Placing holds on materials
  • Shelving materials
  • Keeping statistics
  • Orienting patrons to the library by informing them of services available
  • Providing general reference services for patrons
  • Assisting in the promoting or presentation of programs for patrons

 

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

                Thorough knowledge of:

  • Library policies and procedures,
  • Computerized circulation system
  • Must be able to fax, scan and use photo copiers to provide copying services.

                Ability to:

  • Assisting the public in using personal computers and software products
  • Work independently
  • Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing;
  • Research information for a wide variety of library users;
  • Fax, scan and use photo copiers to provide copying services.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons.
  • Have a neat personal appearance
  • Have an emotionally stable; pleasing manner
  • Have a valid Alabama Driver’s License

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduate from High School and prefer two (2) years clerical experience, preferably in a library.

 

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear. Hand-eye coordination necessary to operate computers and various office equipment. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop and crouch.

 

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Youth Services Librarian

Statement of Duties

The Youth Services Librarian develops and maintains all aspects of the children’s and teen department and collections.  The Librarian is responsible for initiating, planning and conducting a variety of programs and activities to encourage use of the library by people of all ages. Other duties as assigned. 

Supervision

Works under the general direction and supervision of the Library Director.

• Plans and conducts library programming for children and teens

• Ensures proper supervision of children and general public safety

•   Provides reader’s advisory service for children and families.  Assists children in the use of the library and its resources.  Assists parents and other adults in selection of appropriate children’s material.

•   Communicates with homeschoolers, teachers, students, parents and community members to help improve library services

• Organizes and gives tours of the library and its services to school groups, etc.

• Maintains a pleasant, inviting, safe environment for children

•   Assists in developing and maintaining policies and procedures for the Youth Services department

•  Prepares annual department budget.  Monitors expenditures and approves purchases for department in relation to budget and fiscal needs of the library. 

• Makes presentations to community groups to explain library programs and services.  Receives complaints and/or special requests from patrons and community groups, providing response or conflict resolution.

• Continues professional development by participating in seminars and reading professional literature 

• Composes and prepares public relations materials such as news releases, flyers, brochures, etc. clearing them with the Library Director before they are printed or put out for the public

•   Compiles statistics on attendance of all children’s programs throughout the year for the annual report and statistics on the summer reading program

•   Works closely with the Library Director in planning programs and maintains an effective working relationship with fellow staff members. Has a cooperative team spirit.

• May perform collection development for children’s and teen collections as needed

• May maintain the library web page and social media for promotion of the library

• May produce work schedules and sign time sheets for Youth Services Department staff 

 

Knowledge, Ability and Skills

Knowledge of:

•   Library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems

• Organizational and budget management

•   Sensitivity to the special needs of children

•   Children’s literature

•   Child development

•  Social media and public relations 

 

Ability to:

• Supervise others, evaluate their performance, and train them

• Develop and implement programs

• Work with patrons and emergencies effectively

• Work independently

• Handle a great many details, some simultaneously, with accuracy

• Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing

• Create goals and provide leadership for subordinates supervised employees

• Provide excellent customer service to patrons

• Have a valid Alabama Driver’s License and a vehicle

 

Supervisory Duties

May directly supervise and evaluate library associates and library specialists; may train new employees and volunteers. 

 

Experience and Training

Bachelor’s degree preferred or a combination of education and five or more years of related experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
